Questions, problems or suggestions: tvfin@schmalz.rocks
It helps to include your Apple TV model and tvOS version (Settings → General → About), your Jellyfin server version (Dashboard → General in Jellyfin's web interface), and what you were doing when the problem happened. Please don't send passwords or sign-in codes.
Connecting to your server
Enter your server's address the way you would in a browser, for example 192.168.1.10:8096, jellyfin.local:8096 or https://jellyfin.example.com. If you leave off http:// or https://, TVFin picks one for you.
- On your home network, plain HTTP works for an IP address in a private range (such as
192.168.x.xor10.x.x.x), for a.localname, and for a single-word name such asnas. - Everything else needs HTTPS, including a server reached over the internet and a home network name with a dot in it that isn't
.local, such asnas.lanormedia.home.arpa. Apple TV refuses unencrypted connections to those names before TVFin can make them. - If the server isn't found, check that the Apple TV and the server are on the same network, and that the address opens Jellyfin in a browser on another device.
Signing in
- Profiles your server makes public appear on the "Who's Watching?" screen. Choose Other User to type a user name that isn't listed.
- Quick Connect saves typing a password with the remote: TVFin shows a code, and you approve it from Jellyfin on your phone or computer (your profile → Quick Connect). Quick Connect has to be turned on in the server's dashboard.
- Settings → Switch Profile changes user without forgetting the server. Settings → Sign Out forgets the server connection, and so does Change Server on the "Who's Watching?" screen, which goes back to entering an address.
Playback
- If a video won't play, try a lower Streaming Quality in Settings. Your server will convert the file to something Apple TV can play, which needs transcoding enabled on the server.
- Audio and subtitle tracks follow the language choices in your Jellyfin settings unless you change them in TVFin's Settings or during playback.
About TVFin
TVFin is an independent app for Jellyfin servers. It is not affiliated with the Jellyfin project, and it doesn't host or supply any media. It sends nothing to its developer, and connects only to the Jellyfin server you choose; see the privacy policy.
